History

Milestones at COMPO

A lot has happened since 1956 until today. From the first potting soil in consumer-friendly packaging to the brand of the century, it was a long way off. See our milestones as we've evolved over time and set new standards in the industry.

Blossoming

2018Return to B2B business and Brand of the Century

COMPO re-enters the professional sector with its newly created network of companies, COMPO Professional, following the acquisition and incorporation of several international fertiliser companies. Another highlight is COMPO SANA® potting soil being named 'Brand of the Century' by the German ZEIT publishing house.

2017Development of Asian markets

COMPO opens its first distribution company in Shanghai. COMPO serves the skyrocketing demand for high-quality plant care products in Asia through e-commerce and with its own shop-in-shop system in Beijing.

2016Acquisition by Kingenta and new dual leadership

COMPO is acquired by the international Kingenta Group, one of the largest manufacturers and developers of speciality fertilisers. The company has been managed by CEO Stephan Engster and CFO Fan Zhang ever since.

2013-2015New products target the needs of hobby gardeners

One of the greatest challenges faced when purchasing potting soil is the weight of the large bag. 'COMPO SANA® Qualitäts-Blumenerde ca. 50 % weniger Gewicht' potting soil solves this problem with its lower weight, more compact form and robust carrying handle, while offering the same high quality as the original product. COMPO rolls out a completely organic plant care range under the COMPO BIO brand and meets the growing customer demand for organic products.

2011-2014Group independence and division of the business segments

In March 2011, COMPO starts to operate on the market independently of the Group, dividing into two separate companies at the end of 2014. While COMPO GmbH now focuses exclusively on products for end consumers, COMPO Expert GmbH provides solutions for professional users in the sectors of tree nurseries, public green areas, gardening and landscaping, golf and cultivation of ornamentals and agriculture.

Growth

The flow of goods at the headquarters is now fully automated and system guided. The high-bay warehouse measuring 25 metres in height and 27 metres in width has space for almost 9,000 full pallets. 8,000 more slots are available in the Order Picking department.
